There comes a time in everyone’s life when you begin to question your safety. Most likely this is triggered by something you witnessed first-hand, or maybe a current even you saw on the local news. Either way it shocked you. It caused you to stop and re-examine life. Suddenly you feel a bit more vulnerable than you did before.

This is not a feeling any of us like or appreciate. It invokes fear and alerts us to the dangers of our environment. Now, this is not exactly a bad thing. If you ask me, it’s wonderful.

We need to know that we’re not invulnerable to harm and death. Knowing this encourages us to take precautions and be wary of our everyday surroundings. That security equipment that you once thought to be ridiculous and over-the-top is now looking more necessary.

You won’t see me shying away from self-defense, personal protection devices, and home security equipment. As a father and a husband I have a job to do. And it’s the most important job of my life. It’s protecting the ones I hold dearest and making certain they’re safe.

Naturally this may involve some standard security equipment for the home. Although I do realize that I can only prepare my family members for the harsh exterior world, I can protect them while inside the home. This involves heavy dead bolts on each door, window alarms for every window, Plexiglas on the ground floor, and security cameras on all corners of the home’s exterior.

I even take this process one step further with infrared cameras. This allows me to keep an eye on what’s outdoors even at night-time. We tend to believe that this is our most vulnerable time. All is dark and the cloak of night is provided for criminals to lurk. But if they approach my home, I can spot them coming.

I also installed a survey alarm, which basically surveys the lawn and chimes if someone is approaching. These aren’t that expensive.

In the end, it’s really all up to you. What kind of home security equipment do you prefer and what are you willing to spend? If you’re not into the more pricey services such as Brinks and ADT,  at least look into simple measures like secure dead bolts and window alarms.

These will keep unwanted intruders out of your humble abode.
